The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has removed Nigeria From its Piracy Hotspot List.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean Claude Kassi Brou disclosed this while addressing the ongoing 2022 ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja.

He said the decision was a result of a much improved maritime security in recent times with the establishment of the West Africa Regional Maritime Security Centre in the first quarter of 2022.

The ECOWAS Commission President said the maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea was very disturbing but with much effort the region is gradually surmounting the challenge.

He noted that the implementation of the Regional Action Plan remains a high level priority as resource mobilization is key.
